Sock Quiz is my senior thesis film made while attending Ringling College of Art and Design. My specialties are in character animation and rigging, but getting to make this film and control the entire pipeline was a joy. I am responsible for all aspects of the film. The film is not yet publicly available and is currently only available for judges and recruiters. Keep on scrolling to see how Sock Quiz was crafted and watch the film come to life!
Sock Quiz would be incomplete without our loveable cast. The characters were brought to life through the voice talents of Mike Previti and Nevaeh Williams respectively.
PySockoras is our magical tutor and guide to the world of geometry. Well versed in math and hip-hop, he’ll pull out every rhyme he has to make sure his lessons land. He’s made of polyester, cotton, and a little bit of mathamagic.
The star of our film is Caroly, a middle schooler who’s one and only goal is to pass her exam. If only acing geometry was as easy as crafting sock puppets... Caroly went through several variations to get just right.
Caroly’s Room was the main setting for the film. I wanted a space that felt lived in and slightly messy, reflecting Caroly’s creativity and bubbly personality. To add to the crafty feel all models were deformed and surfaced with hand made textures. Each texture pulls from geometric principles, various shapes, and craft materials. The room itself was even shaped like a sock!
A good craftsman is nothing without their tools! The same design philosophy was applied to the film’s various props, with custom textures meant to match the environment.
I was in control of the film from beginning to end, including storyboarding, vis dev, modeling, rigging, surfacing, layout, animation, lighting, rendering, and compositing. This allowed me to have complete control over the aesthetics of the film. When it came time to composite, I wanted to create a colorful world while keeping in mind this film takes place in one girl’s room. I took my time making sure the lighting in every shot was grounded then went in and added energy back in through Nuke.
